New gTLD Domain Names: An Opportunity For The Perfect Name For Your Website

The New gTLDs: What are they and why do they matter?

So you have a great idea for a new online business.  Or, online sales on Ebay or Amazon have grown to the point that you're ready to branch out on your own and start selling on your very own online store or website.  You venture over to GoDaddy to register the perfect .com for your site....with no luck finding a good name.  Very few attractive .com domain names are still available for registration.   Up until recently, most new website owners would have to settle for a so-so .com, or a half way decent .org or .net, unless investing thousands of dollars for a premium name was in the start-up budget.  Domain names are immensely valuable in today's world; if you're not familiar with this fact, take a few minutes and check out recent sales on DNjournal's weekly and annual documented domain name sales charts.  Domain names are commonly referred to as "virtual real estate," and there are still many opportunities in the domain market for savvy investors.  The .com market hasn't been a secret for a long time....there are very few remaining available .coms that will have high demand in the marketplace.  Most of the valuable keywords and business related domains in the other extensions, like .org, .net., and .biz were registered either by website owners or domain name investors.  That's where the new gTLDs come in.

In response to the incredible growth in internet content and developed sites ( and the corresponding lack of quality domains available in the earlier TLDs), ICANN approved the expansion of several new domain extensions.  The extensions, or new gTLDs, include some beautiful options.  Among them are:

  • .website
  • .store
  • .online
  • .space
  • .xyz
  • .site
  • .gold
  • .live
  • .life
See the potential?  Over time, some of these well chosen extensions may prove as popular as .com and .net.  They certainly make for a great name when coupled with the right keyword.
