The new gTLD domain extensions are, in many cases, very affordable. However, many of the "normal" registration fees have been inflated by hundreds or thousands of dollars per year due to fact that they are considered "premium" names. This system of selecting premium names and increasing the registration AND renewal fees down the road is far from perfect. I'll show you how to use this to your advantage with a specific example from our portfolio in a moment.
Registration Fees: The new gTLDs vary from .99/year (plus a small ICANN surcharge) to thousands of dollars. The good news is that if you buy a domain name that doesn't have a premium attached to it, the registration fee won't be at a premium rate either. At Godaddy right now, the following extensions are .99 cents to 4.99 for the first year:
- .website (.99)
- .xyz (.99)
- .online (4.99)
- .site (.99)
- .live (1.99)
- .fyi (4.99)
- .gold (4.99)
Some of the better extensions for a new website, right? (Note: many of the new gTLDs are better served with names that fit the extension. For example, ".one" may not be a great extension to use for many new potential sites, but .online fits pretty much anything)
